Tai Chi Course Introduction
Balance · Motion · Coordination · Culture
This Tai Chi course is rooted in the traditional Wu-style curriculum and the Yang-style Cheng Man-ching training lineage. Through structured practice in forms, standing meditation (Zhan Zhuang), foundational exercises, and push hands—integrated with modern principles of human movement science—the course helps students develop a resilient body structure, enhance functional movement, cultivate whole-body coordination, and experience the wisdom of traditional Chinese culture through physical practice.
Who This Course Is For
This course welcomes adult students of all ages and experience levels. It is especially suitable for those who spend long hours sitting and are seeking to refine posture, improve balance, and develop better coordination. Through gentle and progressive practice, students learn to better sense their bodies, regulate both body and mind, and find inner equilibrium through stillness and motion.
Balance: Balance is the foundation of human movement and the starting point of Tai Chi training.
Through training in upright postural alignment, relaxed composure, weight shifting, and stable structure, students develop balance, lower-body stability, and spatial awareness. The goal is to help the body remain natural, steady, and composed in both stillness and motion.
Motion: Building on a stable foundation to enhance movement efficiency.
Tai Chi is a unique approach to physical conditioning. By relaxing the joints, aligning the skeletal structure, and optimizing movement patterns and biomechanical efficiency, students improve overall body function. The course teaches students to move as an integrated whole rather than relying on isolated muscular effort, helping daily activities and other forms of exercise become more fluid, natural, and effortless.
Coordination: The heart of Tai Chi practice.
Coordination is at the core of Tai Chi training. The course emphasizes the synchronization of upper and lower body, the integration of intention and external form, and the fluid transition between substantial and insubstantial. Through form practice and push hands, students develop the ability to connect and coordinate different parts of the body. Over time, students learn to sense the transmission and transformation of force, allowing the hands, body, and waist to move as one integrated whole.
Culture: Embodying traditional wisdom through practice.
Tai Chi is more than a form of exercise; it is a living cultural tradition. The course incorporates traditional concepts such as Yin-Yang balance, the mutual support of stillness and motion, and the dynamic interplay of emptiness and fullness. Through practice, students are guided to experience the traditional Chinese understanding of the body, nature, and human relationships. While developing physical ability, they also encounter the spirit of harmony, balance, and inclusiveness embedded in Tai Chi.
The practice of Tai Chi is a process of understanding the body, refining movement, developing coordination, and appreciating culture. Through consistent practice, students can build a more stable and efficient physical state while gaining a deeper understanding of themselves, of others, and of the natural world through traditional wisdom.
